The hilarity is that these people who abuse WFH would just as likely been the old 'coasters' in the office. Doing the bare minimum, getting on a PIP, getting off a PIP through hard work and then right back to coasting.

WFH requires self discipline, just as working in an office does. I have made many friendships in an office setup but I can tell them 'No, no coffee chat for me right now' because I am disciplined and know I need to work. Whereas coasters would have just spent all day dodging work. WFH is no different, can I walk my dog during the day - yes. Have I a mound of tasks to complete - also yes.

Musk just sounds like a lot of the manager-types who would have loved Victorian factories so they could see all the busy bees working below. He would have been the first to shout down the mad concept of people getting weekends off work when it was introduced.

A good manager will be able to see who is and isn't performing in a remote setup and act accordingly. Bums in seats does not a good manager make, in fact if you need to see the people who report to you in order to feel like you are doing YOUR job - you're probably not a good manager.
